Poodle Facts:The friendly, intelligent and active poodle is one of the smartest dogs in the canine purebred lineup. This fun loving canine was originally a working dog bred and developed in both Germany and Russia for field hunting which involved retrieving downed waterfowl in the water.

What is a canine hybrid? The Bernedoodle hybrid, while also bred to be smaller sizes, will more usually be a Bernese Mountain Dog bred with a Standard Poodle. When two purebred canines are bred together, in the past they were simply referred to as “mutts”. Now, when two separate breeds are intentionally crossed or mixed together, they are often referred to as “designer” or “hybrid” dogs.
What does the Bernedoodle look like? While the appearance and size of the Bernedoodle will largely depend upon the appearance and size of both parents, as they will more usually be crossed with a Standard Poodle, they will often be a larger dog. The Bernedoodle hybrid can take on more of the physical appearance and traits of the Bernese Mountain Dog parent or more of the physical appearance and traits of the Poodle parent.

The Bernedoodle is an attractive dog. They tent to be pure black, black-and-white, black-and-brown, or tricolor (black, white, and brown). Depending in the color pattern, the bi-colors are quite striking, and the ti-colors are beautiful.

Motley5Temperament: A hybrid dog combines the traits and characteristics of it’s purebred parents, and the resulting pups end up with the best attributes of each. These dogs tend to have the sweetness and loyalty of the Bernese, and the goofy liveliness of the Poodle. Like the Bernese, they are gently around children and the elderly, and because they love to work, they often make excellent therapy dogs.

Most Bernedoodles have a moderate activity level. They love to play, run and hike with you, and may inherit the Poodle’s love for retrieving and swimming. When it’s time to relax, Bernedoodles are usually happy to join you on the couch-on your lap, if you let them. Most of them have little need for personal space.

Breeding:The Bernadoodle is increasing in popularity. It is very important to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder who administers regular health tests on their dogs. Ask the breeder for adequate proof of health testing prior to getting a puppy, and make sure you are getting a puppy from a well researched, reputable breeder.
